CHICAGO (Dec 5, 2013) — In a major announcement in the campaign for State Representative in the 39th District, Alderman Joe Moreno (1st) announced his support for the candidacy of progressive Democrat Will Guzzardi at a Guzzardi campaign event on Wednesday night.
"My constituents have spoken loud and clear. They are tired of the broken political system in Springfield, and they are ready for new and independent leadership," said Ald. Moreno, who represents a largely Latino constituency. "Our families want representation that stands with them. From fighting back against the closing of Brentano School to standing up for a fair economy that respects working people, Will has been an ally for our community every step of the way. I'm proud to endorse him."
Guzzardi is challenging six-term incumbent Toni Berrios, daughter of County Assessor and Cook County Democratic Party chairman Joe Berrios. Guzzardi ran a grassroots campaign for the same seat in the 2012 primaries, falling short of Berrios by only 125 votes in that election.
Moreno’s endorsement comes with an investment of financial resources as well as the volunteer capacity of Moreno’s powerful political organization, 1st Ward First.
“Alderman Moreno’s endorsement is a huge boon to this campaign,” Guzzardi said. “It speaks to the support this campaign has across all communities in the district. I look forward to working closely with the Alderman on winning this election and improving the lives of our constituents once I’m elected.”
Moreno joins progressive aldermen Scott Waguespack (32nd) and John Arena (45th) in supporting Guzzardi’s second bid. All three aldermen represent portions of the 39th District.
One of the most visible Latino political figures in Chicago, Moreno is known in his ward and around the city for his relentless focus on constituent services and improving the quality of life for his residents. He has fought for new investments in his ward’s schools and parks, and has overseen a flourishing of new businesses and residential development in his ward.
Moreno enjoys considerable popularity in his ward, winning his first election in 2011 with 74% of the vote and defeating incumbent committeeman Jesse Ruben Juarez in 2012 by a margin of 57% - 16%.
